Dear Taxacomers.

Between 1828-1849 Nathaniel Wallich (1786–1854) oversaw the lithographic reproduction of a hand-written list of dried plant specimens, which he was distributing from the East India Company Herbarium in London. Individual lithograph pages (leaves) of this listing were included with the bundles of specimens as they were sent out to the approximately 60 recipients.

Many of the recipients kept and bound these pages in a book, which became informally known as the ‘Wallich Catalogue’, or ‘Wallich’s List’, although the title on the first page is:

'A numerical list of dried specimens of plants in the East India Company's Museum, collected under the superintendence of Dr. Wallich of the Company's Botanic Garden at Calcutta.'

Consequently, librarians have catalogued this book in a number of ways, but searching on ‘Wallich’ combined with ‘Catalogue’, ‘Numerical list’ or ‘List’ usually retrieves the relevant catalogue record.

As part of on-going research on the Wallichian Distribution I am trying to locate all extant copies of the Wallich Catalogue (which contain at least some original lithograph pages), and I would be very interested to hear from librarians, archivists and other collection managers who have a copy in their collections or know of a copy elsewhere. A list of the copies so far located is given below.

Thank you for your help with this project, and I hope you uncover further copies of this fascinating publication.
