The Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre (BiK-F) has been founded by the Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung, the Goethe-University Frankfurt am Main, and additional partners. It is funded by the Federal State of Hessen through its Initiative for the Development of Scientific and Economic Excellence (LOEWE). The mission of the centre is to carry out internationally outstanding research on the interactions of biodiversity and climate change at the organism level.

The Data and Modelling Centre (Research Area E) of BiK-F invites applications for a

Postdoctoral position in dynamic vegetation modelling
(Ref. #E40)

to contribute to the “Limpopo Living Landscapes” project, funded within the SPACES initiative of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The position is subject to prior budgetary approval, which will be expected within the next weeks.
The project aims to understand the combined effects of land use and climate change on rangeland vegetation, biodiversity and rural livelihoods in the Limpopo Province, South Africa, and to identify farm and policy level intervention strategies that support rural livelihoods and the natural resources. Subproject 1 will adjust the next-generation dynamic vegetation model “aDGVM2” for the study region and combine the model with land use models to project future vegetation dynamics and sustainable management policies.

Your tasks:
· Extend the dynamic vegetation model aDGVM2 by sub-models to describe management and land use impacts on vegetation
· Couple aDGVM with simulation optimization tools and economic models
· Project sustainable land use and management strategies for the study region
· Cooperate with partners of the “Limpopo Living Landscapes” project

Your profile:
· PhD in biology, ecology, Earth system science, physics, mathematics, geography or related fields
· Experience in dynamic vegetation modelling and plant ecology
· Interests in ecological economics are an advantage
· Experience in programming (preferentially C++) and high performance computing
· Good skills in written and oral English are required

Salary and benefits are in accordance with a public service position in Germany (TV-H E13, 100%). The contract shall start March, 1st 2014 and will be limited to a 3-year term. The Senckenberg Research Institute supports equal opportunity of men and women and therefore strongly invites women to apply. Equally qualified handicapped applicants will be given preference. The type of handicap should not prevent work needed to conduct the research. The duty station will be Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The employer is the Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung.

Please send your application before January, 15th 2014 preferably by e-mail (attachment in a single pdf document), mentioning the reference of this position (Ref. #E40) and including a letter outlining your suitability for the post, a detailed CV, contact details of two references and, if available, publications to the address below.
