Could any member help me in solving this mystery

Cinnamomum cassia (L.) J. Presl (Chinese cinnamom, Chinese cassia) and
Neolitsea cassia (L.) Kosterm (Grey bollywood, smooth-barb bollygum) are
supposed to be two distinct plants, but both supposed to be based on same
basionym Laurus cassia L.

http://www.tropicos.org/Name/50148283

GRIN cites *Laurus cassia* L. (basionym); *Litsea zeylanica* Nees & T.
Nees and *Neolitsea zeylanica* (Nees & T. Nees) Merr. as synonyms of
Neotitsea cassia (L.) Kosterm, but is silent on Cinnamomum cassia, except
that it cites Cinnamomum cassia auct. as synonym of C. aromaticum Nees

The Plant list cites *Laurus cassia* L. as well as *Cinnamomum
aromaticum*Nees as synonyms of Cinnamomum cassia (Nees & T. Nees) J.
Presl, silent on
combination C. cassia (L.) C. Presl but does not cite any synonym for
Neolitsea cassia (L.) Kosterm (not even the basionym for combination is
mentioned).

According to Flora of China Cinnamomum cassia (L.) D. Don is the accepted
name with *Laurus cassia* L. *Cinnamomum aromaticum* Nees and *Persea
cassia *(L.) Sprengel. as synonyms

I am at loss to comprehend how single binomial can be basionym for more
than one distinct, accepted names. Any help in better understanding of
situation?
