Go to - http://east.tnc.org/reports/all_assessments. You will find many such assessments that have shaped conservation policies and strategies across major portions of the globe. Reports range from "Alaska - Coastal Forests and Mountains Ecoregion Assessment and Resource Synthesis" to "Yunnan Great Rivers Project Conservation Assessment" and many between!

Note that only North American assessments dwell on species occurrence data, and the majority of that data are derived from NatureServe's database. Species-level occurrences only work well for planning if you have fairly consistent data across a geographic unit drawn from representative taxa. That is what NatureServe specializes in relative to "imperiled" species. Note that if you go to the NatureServe web site, most of the data you access is a distillation of the data available to subscribers and member organizations.

Here are three data lines from our GIS that show the data fields NatureServe supports for GIS. (sorry for the crappy paste job - but plain text doesn't support database entries. There are three occurrences here, the data are broken into three pastes to accommodate primitive email! Note some data fields are empty)

Subject: [Taxacom] documented use of occurrence data

Folks,

A colleague and I are hunting for documented examples of occurrence data whose release/accessibility/analysis has resulted in new government policy, conservation or otherwise. What I'm trying to do is illustrate to the uninitiated that use/reuse of occurrence data has an effect on government policy makers. If there are no examples, well then, I guess that's just as telling...

Links to reprints and policies most welcome,

David P. Shorthouse
