A bit late in the season for soliciting grad students, but the the money just became available. Any effort to pass this around to potential applicants would be appreciated.
RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIP, MASTER’S of SCIENCE
Insect Biodiversity Lab., Dept. of Plant Science
South Dakota State University, Brookings, South Dakota
A regular 49% graduate research assistantship leading to an M.S. degree in Plant Science – Entomology, or Biological Science. The investigation will be in association with our native plants biomass agronomy team. Work needed is primarily on the biology and agronomics of the switchgrass gall midge, Chilophaga virgati. This will include geographic surveys, gall midge taxonomy, cultivar tolerances, DNA barcode discrimination of populations, parasitoids, insect-plant relations, and insect life history. This is an opportunity to learn about the agronomic side of biomass and biofuels production. Much of the work will be outdoors at research farms. Assisting with similar and related projects, and teaching in an entomology laboratory class, is expected. The chosen applicant will be expected to work in a team context as well as independently, express an aptitude for insect biology and taxonomy, be work oriented, and professional. A good background in entomology is important; a background in basic statistics and plant biology, especially of grasses, is helpful. A driver’s license valid in the United States and a clean driving record is required. Good public speaking and writing skills are essential. Attendance at professional meetings and publication of research results is required.
Applications will be accepted until the position is filled or cancelled. Each application shall consist of 1) a formal letter of application [1500 words or less] describing the applicants interests and background as pertinent to graduate school and professional goals; 2) a current resumé or curriculum vitae; 3) the names and contact information for three professional references; and 4) addresses for online profiles, if available. Electronically submitted applications are strongly preferred. International applicants should state their TOEFL score. GRE scores are not required, but are encouraged.
