Research Assistant SC-1731, The New York Botanical Garden

            The Research Assistant will help the Curator of North American Botany prepare the New Manual of Vascular Plants of Northeastern United States and Adjacent Canada, the revision in progress of Gleason & Cronquist's Manual (1991).  Duties include reviewing treatments written by the Curator; reviewing treatments submitted by project collaborators and communicating with those collaborators; locating, reviewing, and organizing works of literature relevant to the classification, identification, nomenclature, geographic distribution, and habitats of plants occurring in the New Manual range; occasionally visiting herbaria to check specimens; occasionally conducting targeted field work; writing treatments of selected plant groups for the New Manual; and assisting the Curator with research on floristics and systematics of plants in the New Manual range.
            Requirements for this position are a B.S. in Botany or Biology, several years of field and herbarium experience with the flora of northeastern North America; extensive knowledge of identification, classification, nomenclature, morphology, habitats, and geographic distributions of the vascular plants of the northeastern U.S.A. and adjacent Canada; experience working with herbarium specimens; and ability to rapidly search and compile the literature of systematic and floristic botany.
