Dear Taxacomers,

I am trying to solve a small mystery regarding the valid (i.e. available)
publication date for the graptolite (fossil) genus Cyclograptus Spencer.

Nomenclator Zoologicus has the following information:

Cyclograptus Spencer 1882 Canad. Natural., (N.S.) 10, 165 [n.n.]; Proc.
Amer. Assoc., 31, 365.

Other sources (e.g. WoRMS) have a publication date for the genus as 1878,
as per the entry at
http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=579924 .

There is a record available via BHL at
https://biodiversitylibrary.org/page/5800061 where Spencer describes the
genus as new. This is from Trans. Acad. Sci. St. Louis, IV, 1884, p. 592,
which appears in the following list of publication details for the type
species (see
https://www.flickr.com/photos/internetarchivebookimages/20318694789/):

Cydograptus rotadentatus Spencer, Canadian Nat, X, 1882, p. 165, nomen
nudum; Trans. Acad. Sci. St. Louis, IV, 1884, pp. 565, 592, .593, pi. 6,
figs. 6, 6a; Bull. Mus. Univ. State Missouri, I, 1884, pp.'15. 42, 43, pi.
6, figs. 6, 6a

http://www.graptolite.net/Cyclograptus/ has the following entry:
Genus Cyclograptus Spencer, 1878
Type species: Cyclograptus rotadentatus Spencer, 1884

So it seems we have a choice between 1882 (2 instances, one a nomen nudum),
1878 and 1884... and can a genus (of that era) have a valid (available)
publication date that pre-dates that of its type species?

Any/all assistance appreciated,

Regards,
